2 January 2024 – Aker BP has contracted technology supplier Vissim to implement an upgraded oil spill detection solution at the operator’s fixed and floating installations on the Norwegian continental shelf.
Aker BP will equip installations Valhall, Ula, Edvard Grieg, Ivar Aasen, Alvheim and Skarv with the new and upgraded oil spill detection solution.
The upgraded radar-based oil spill detection system uses advanced image processing for greater sensitivity, allowing it to detect smaller spills. It uses machine learning to classify detected phenomena, thus reducing false alarms common in radar-based oil spill detection systems. The latter reduces the amount of unnecessary false alarms in the control room, which means less stress on operators.
The new solution has resulted in higher sensitivity, which means that smaller spills will be detected but less false alarms. It also re-uses hardware that is already installed offshore and onshore, thereby keeping capital investments to a minimum. It is a win-win for everyone involved,
says Håvard Odden, director of Vissim’s North Sea operations.
Regulations require operators to have oil spill detection technologies that are independent of weather conditions. The two-in-one solution from Vissim allows both vessel tracking and oil spill detection through the same radar. Increased sensitivity in the new system reduces false alarms from heavy rain, vessel wakes, and other factors.
Second contract in one year
Last autumn, Aker BP selected Vissim to develop an expanded digital platform (dashboard) for oil spill monitoring and detection. This solution integrates input from radars, satellites, and subsea sensors into a comprehensive thus easy-to-understand visual overview.
The new and upgraded oil spill detection solution will become an integrated part Aker BP´s digital platform for oil spill monitoring and detection. Consequently, this innovation will improve the system’s accuracy and responsiveness.
We are delighted with Aker BP’s and the Norwegian oil industry’s response to our new solutions. They clearly demonstrate that the E in HSE is a top priority for them alongside health and safety,
adds Håvard Odden.
